THIRTY-TWO

‘That makes no sense,’ Aydin said, shaking his head as his brain tried in vain to put together the pieces.

‘What doesn’t?’

‘My uncle was no spy.’

‘You didn’t know him.’ Her voice was stern. ‘I was with him nearly every day for years.’

‘He wasn’t a spy. What makes you think that?’

‘I don’t think it, I know it. So maybe spy isn’t the right word, but he was working with the British government. I met the man your uncle reported to several times.’

‘Who?’

‘I don’t know his real name. He was English, called himself Mr Grey. Maybe that really was his name, maybe not.’

‘Mr Grey?’

‘That’s what I said. He came to the house.’

‘And how do you know who he worked for? Did he give you a business card?’

Esma’s face screwed up in anger, and Aydin realised he’d overstepped the mark. She was helping him. He certainly believed what she was telling him was the truth as she saw it, but had she simply read the situation wrong, or read far too much into it? Possibly, but that didn’t mean he needed to shoot her down. The only reason she was helping him now was because she believed his uncle was in fact working against the Islamists who supported the Turkish government. That he’d been working with the British, whose agenda may have been aligned with her own group’s.

‘I’m sorry,’ he said. ‘But perhaps you can appreciate what you’re telling me about my uncle doesn’t match with what I know.’

‘You mean what you thought you knew. If he was a double-agent, playing against the Islamists, then it makes perfect sense.’

‘What do you know about this Mr Grey?’ Aydin asked.

‘Virtually nothing. I never managed to get a picture of him, or anything like that. Of course I’ve had friends try to track him down and identify him, but we’ve never succeeded.’

‘When did you last see him?’

She thought about it for a few moments. ‘Not for over a year.’

‘But you also said you think it was a British team who snatched my uncle?’

‘I didn’t say I thought that, I’m sure they were British. You think that doesn’t make sense? But you must realise that the British, just like the Turkish, have more than one side at play within their ranks.’

Aydin certainly wouldn’t dispute that one. It was one of the very reasons why his trail had led him to ATS. Did Esma know anything about that?

‘I need to find this Mr Grey,’ Aydin said.

Esma didn’t look too sure about that.

‘Can you help me?’

She got to her feet, looking nervous all of a sudden.

‘I’ve said enough. I really should go.’

She paused, looked to Aydin, but then turned and walked out without another word.

Aydin hadn’t moved from the bed more than an hour later when the young nurse came back in with yet another tray of food. Esma’s words and the implications of what she’d said were still swimming in his mind as the nurse took a seat.

He saw her glance to his wrists. A startled look on her face.
